CBD May Help Prevent COVID-19; Here’s Why

The COVID-19 pandemic is the single most important challenge the world faces today. The globalpandemichas affected millions of people and caused the loss of lives and severaltrillions of dollars in lost patronage and earnings.

Except for experimental vaccinations, there are no medicines for COVID-19 yet. However, recent researchsuggests that CBD could potentially prevent you from becoming infected with the coronavirus.Experts agree that cannabis for COVID-19 might just be the panacea we’ve been waiting for.

COVID-19

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The condition affects vital organs of the human body, majorly the lungs and respiratory system.

First discovered in Wuhan, China, the SARS-CoV-2 virus is one of a family of seven species to have infected humans. The spread of the virus caused widespread panic andit has been designated a global pandemic. It is estimated to date, that about 388 million people have contracted the virus with a global mortality figure of about 5.71 million people. In the United States, infection counts have surpassed 75 million with recorded mortality of almost one million (896k, at the time of writing) patients.

The coronavirus spreads through the air from the mouth and nose of an infected person. It is carried by small respiratory droplets from an infected person when they sneeze, cough, sing, talk or breathe. Healthy individuals can contract the virus when they breathe in air shared with a person carrying the virus or touch surfaces whereon these droplets have settled.People that have been most affected are the elderly, and individuals with underlying respiratory conditions and morbidities. Most people who fall sick with COVID-19 will experience mild to moderate symptoms. Most would recover without special treatments, while others can become seriously ill and may require medical attention.

The scientific breakthrough of CBD for COVID-19 would change the narrative for people who have contracted the virus and those most at risk but with limited access to vaccines.

How CBD can Help fight COVID

According to scientists at the Oregon state university and the Oregon Health and Sciences University, certain CBD variants could potentially prevent you from contracting COVID-19. The researchers tested both THC and CBD and their co-generic cannabinoids to determine which could effectively impact the spread of infection of SARS-CoV-2 virus in the human genome. The researchidentified three compounds namely; CBG-A, THC-A, and CBD-A as having the potential when administered in high doses to block the viral entry on host cells. It is important to note that all three compounds are co-generic compounds of CBD. The result of the study also indicated that THC and its co-generic compounds were not effective in inhibiting the spread of the virus.

The researchers highlighted that Cannabidiol (CBD)could potentially inhibit the infection of theSARS-CoV-2 virus in human lung carcinoma cells and in mice specimens. The study also suggested that certain CBD dosage for COVID-19 could potentially reverse the effects of the virus in an already infected patient.

How CBD Interacts with SARS-CoV-2

SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA) enveloped virus composed of a lipid bilayer and four structural proteins that drive viral particle formation. The four structural proteins are spike (S), membrane (M), and envelope (E),and the nucleocapsid (N) protein.

To determine how CBD and its co-genetic interacted with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the researchers exposed the human lung epithelial cells to the COVID-19 virus. The specimen (cannabinoid samples and COVID-19 strains) was incubatedfor 24 hours, after which it was injected into human lung epithelial cells. The result showed that cannabinoids CBG-A, THC-A, and CBD-A effectively stopped the spread of the COVID viral strain in the sample cells. The cells had no trace of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA, meaning the cannabinoids were able toblock the virus from entering the cells.

The researchers used a technique known as the “Affinity Selector Mass Spectrometry” toanalyze the interaction of the virus and the cannabinoids. The same process was repeated for alpha and beta strains of variants found in the United Kingdom and South Africa.

The final result showed that cannabinoids CBG-A, THC-A, and CBD-A effectively inhibited viral entry into healthy cells.

Indications

  1. The research indicates that thevirus-neutralizing properties of the CBD variants are potent and also could be applied to other evolving strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
  2. The research indicates that both CBD-A, CBG-A, and THC-A have very strong potential at inhibiting viral entry in healthy patients and in the treatment of patients who have already contracted the virus.
  3. The research suggests that oral applications would best serve as a treatment therapy than all other forms at this time.
  4. The researchers caution against the use of non-medical formulations including edibles, inhalants, or topicals as a preventative or treatment therapy at present.
  5. The research indicates that CBD has strong antiviral potential that can also be applied to evolving pathogenic viruses and several small molecules that target host stress response pathways.
  6. No toxicity was observed at the effective doses.

Therapeutic Cannabidiol (CBD)

It is no surprise that Cannabidiol (CBD) offers this depth of medicinal intervention for COVID-19. It has over time been proven as a potent therapeutic intervention for a variety of illnesses.CBD is the only cannabinoid that is approved for therapeutic use by the FDA.

CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant. It can be found in three forms, but except for full-spectrum CBD which contains small amounts of THC, all other forms offer a solid therapeutic value without the risk of a high. CBD Isolate and Broad-spectrum CBD formulations as most suited for use for COVID treatments as with most other conditions.

CBD is sold as tinctures, oils, powder, topical, in beverages, snacks and bars.

Conclusion

This piece of research although in its early stages holds enough promise for a potential CBD Vaccine response for COVID-19. The plant-based antidote has already proven efficacious as a potent therapeutic drug in other debilitating conditions and If these early successes Is sustained, the world may just be back on the road to normal.
